ABVB 24 frame EDL Creation

Version 7.2 of the Avid Media Composer (ABVB) will allow the ability to create, manage and generate 24 frame EDL's. Currently 24 frame EDL's can only be created from a 24 frame sequence. This assumes a film project on either the Avid Film Composer or the film option on any of the other models.

Version 10 of all Media Composer models with film option, or Symphony Universal will allow a 24 frame EDL to be created from a 24 frame sequence. In version 10 of Media Composer and since version 2.0 of Avid Symphony Universal, these projects types are called "24P" either NTSC or PAL.

The steps to creating a 24 frame EDL are straightforward (and apply to all version of software since 7.2):

      1. After digitizing the material into a 24 frame project, highlight the "Start" timecode column. For NTSC this will be 30 frames and for PAL, 24 frames per second timecode.
      2. Depending on platform, "control-D" (Windows) or "command-D" (Mac) will open up a selection dialog box. Scroll down and select "24 TC."
      3. After clicking OK, the "24 TC" column will appear in the bin with the new tiemcodes entered. For NTSC, the 2:3 relationship is reversed (see NTSC timecode relationship). For PAL, the timecode is recalculated from 00:00:00:00 in base 24 instead of 25.
      4. The user can track the 24 frame timecode above the source or record monitor by selecting it from the menu above the desired monitor.
      5. Launch EDL manager and load the sequence. For 7.2 based editing systems, please contact Avid customer support for version 10.0.1 now available. In order to create 24 frame EDL's, EDL Manager needs to be on a system with a dongle blessed with at least one of the film options. This is not an issue when creating EDL's from the same system from which the sequence was edited. Under the source/record settings, select "24TC" for the source and 24 for the record. EDL type is done via the options (control/command 3).
      6. Update EDL and export/save as needed for online.
